Travel brings us up close to some of our planet’s most stunning natural wonders and connects us with cultures around the globe. From vibrant coral reefs and lush rainforests to snowy landscapes and soaring mountain peaks, our world provides countless opportunities for exploration. Traveling also offers an unparalleled opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and open our eyes to new perspectives.
While travel enriches our own lives, it also has the power to impact the places we visit and the people who live there - for better or worse.
In recent years, the number of international tourists has skyrocketed. While this growth creates much-needed jobs and income, it can also take an enormous toll on destinations and their local residents. Mass tourism development and irresponsible visitors can destroy fragile environments, spark conflict with local communities, harm vulnerable species, and overload a destination’s infrastructure. Not to mention tourism’s carbon footprint is contributing to the greatest threat to our planet - climate change. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
At Sustainable Travel International, we believe that tourism can and should be a force for good and a powerful means to solve these same issues. But in order for this to happen, tourism must be well-managed, and visitors and travel companies must act with purpose. We’re taking on some of the most pressing issues affecting travel and tourism, from carbon emissions to marine pollution, and have worked in more than 100 destinations around the world. We know that we can’t do this alone and that sustainable tourism will only become a reality if we each do our part. That’s why we take a collaborative approach focusing on empowering local communities, engaging travelers and businesses in responsible practices, and strengthening destination management.
Through our work we aim to create a future where all tourism is sustainable tourism and each new adventure helps to safeguard nature and empower communities.
