The mission of Second Harvest Food Bank is to end hunger in Orange County. Second Harvest works in multiple strategic ways to eliminate hunger in our community, leveraging our position with food industry partners, including manufacturers, distributors, farmers and supermarkets, to obtain and provide food for our programs and community partner organizations. We lead these community partners - including shelters, church pantries, schools, and senior centers - to innovative and sustainable solutions in order to bridge the meal gap.
Much of the food distributed by Second Harvest includes surplus or superficially blemished food, or product nearing its expiration date, which is safe for consumption but not suitable for retail. Recovering this food from California farmers and local grocery stores, Second Harvest provides the link to food reaching the table rather than the landfill. This has a positive impact on waste reduction and greenhouse gas emissions while providing food to low-income children, seniors and families that lack access to nutritious food. Together we are creating a future in which no one goes hungry, ever.
