Mission Statement

We believe in empowering people to take positive action for our reefs through engaging in citizen science, connecting people with reef science, and local conservation projects.

Description

Reef Check Australia is an innovative environmental charity dedicated to providing ways for the community to better understand, appreciate and protect oceans and marine environments. We rely on volunteers to assist in monitoring reef health and providing education and information to the general community on small things that they can do to drive big change.

Program Details

We currently undertake reef health surveys in South-east and Northern Queensland. We conduct free monthly science lectures (which have moved on-line at present). Our volunteers host stalls at events such as World Environment Day, Caloundra Music Festival and Moreton Bay Research Station Open Day to enlighten the community on the importance of protecting our marine environment. These events provide an opportunity for our volunteers to show the general public ways that they can make small changes with significant impacts. During COVID19 restrictions, we even ran several free "Crafternoons", to encourage members of the community to try something different. Our organisation regularly organises and conducts underwater cleanups and is a key organiser in one of the most significant cleanup events on the Sunshine Coast.
