Mission Statement

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) is an organization of farmers, gardeners, and consumers working together to create a sustainable regional food system that's ecologically sound and economically viable. Through demonstration and education, we promote land stewardship, organic food production, and local marketing. We bring consumer and farmer together to make high quality food available to all people.

Description

Since 1983, NOFA-NY has been serving the organic and sustainable food and farming community. We became the first organic certifier in New York State in 1984. With the arrival of National Organic Standards in 2002, NOFA-NY established separate certification and education functions and offices, while maintaining a cohesive strategy to support the organic farming community. Today, we are New York State’s leading organization providing effective programs and services that promote sustainable, local, organic food and farming. NOFA-NY is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that is elected by our membership. NOFA-NY is one of seven northeastern state organizations that work together under the umbrella of the Northeast Organic Farming Association —the oldest grassroots organic farming organization in the country!

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING
NOFA-NY programs cover a wide range of farming topics, including transitioning to organic vegetable production, dairy and livestock management, business and marketing techniques, and soil health. We offer conferences, on-farm field days, and free online resources and educational videos to an ever-growing farming audience. ADVOCACY WORK
NOFA-NY brings together concerned citizens to advocate for sustainable, local, organic food and farm systems. We empower our members to engage their state and federal representatives on food and farm policy. Each January our members vote on policy resolutions that direct our work for the year ahead.
CONSUMER OUTREACH
NOFA-NY helps support member farmers by building bridges and markets through consumer outreach and education. NOFA-NY’s searchable online Food & Farm Guide allows consumers to find local, organic farms, markets, and restaurants. Our social media channels and eNews keep consumers up to date on the latest news in organic and sustainable food and farming. Sign up at nofany.org/enews to stay in the loop!
ORGANIC CERTIFICATION
Our certification branch, NOFA-NY Certified Organic, LLC, has been accredited by the USDA National Organic Program since 2002. We operate the largest organic certification agency in New York State and certify operations across the country. Visit us at www.nofany.org/certification or call (607) 724-9851.
