New Haven/Leon Sister City Project

Mission Statement

New Haven/Leon SCP is a  binational organization promoting social justice, education and sustainable development in the New Haven and León communities.

The primary work of the NH/LSCP in León, Nicaragua is to support community based initiatives in the rural communities of Goyena and Troilo and to facilitate programs and projects that improve public health and community based education, support women’s rights, and address root causes of poverty. In New Haven we work to build new projects and coalitions to confront the climate change crisis.  In both communities we work to build local leadership and capacity and address root causes of poverty and injustice.

Program Details

Our work in Nicaragua focuses on the rural communities of Goyena and Trolio outside Leόn. We work with community leaders there to improve education, develop youth leadership and work on economic sustainability and environmental issues. Our goal is to create an environmentally sustainable, economically self-sufficient, active community that is empowered to continue to improve their quality of life.
In New Haven, we coordinate volunteer committees that support projects in New Haven and in Leon. As part of our social justice mission, the impact of climate change on rural communities and on New Haven has become an urgent concern and we now lead New Haven Climate Movement, and goNewHavengo, and created the Nicaragua Carbon Offset Fund to fund clean cook stove installations in Nicaragua.
