Nature Canada

Mission Statement

Nature Canada’s mission is to protect and conserve nature in Canada by engaging Canadians and by advocating on behalf of nature.

Canada’s wilderness is the world’s envy. It’s our duty to keep our true north strong and green.
Over the past 80 years, Nature Canada's members and partners have protected over 110 million acres and thousands of species. Our nature network consists of more than 800 nature groups and 100,000 supporters collaborating to discover, defend, and restore nature.
Nature Canada's strategic intents are to protect species and habitats by speaking up as the national voice for nature; promote nature as part of the Canadian identity by engaging Canadians in celebrating and protecting nature and to strengthen our roots by growing our community of nature lovers.
We envision a Canada where threatened species and their habitats are protected, common species remain common, the integrity of ecosystems are maintained and Canadians embrace a culture of conservation in their everyday lives.

Program Details

Core Programs and Initiatives:
Protected Areas Campaigns - Canada made a promise to protect 25% of land and oceans by 2025, and 30% by 2030. Nature Canada builds momentum across the country to protect nature, the plants and animals that call it home, and respect Indigenous rights.
NatureHood - An experiential program that connects people of all ages, especially young people, to nature right where they live — through events, educational and stewardship activities, and wildlife observation! We are focused on creating equitable access to nature, addressing barriers experienced by racialized communities, and increasing sustainable opportunities for underrepresented groups.
Save Bird Lives - We celebrate and protect birds through a variety of programs that engage communities in bird-friendly practices that benefit whole ecosystems including Bird City Campaign, World Migratory Bird Day, Save our Swallows, and Cree Nation Bird Conservation.
Women for Nature - A collaborative network of voices of Canadian women with vision – women of influence who demonstrate their passion for nature, through mentorship and leadership opportunities, passing their values onward to drive change.
Programs in Development:
Nature-Based Climate Solutions - We are working to advance NBCS from all levels of government through policy work and by engaging a vast network of nature groups across the country on grassroots actions. It's a unique opportunity to mobilize new constituencies as part of the broader movement addressing the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss.
Nature Restoration - Restoration has the potential to positively influence degraded landscapes, improving conditions for biodiversity and carbon sequestration. As a scalable process, restoration provides opportunities for large scale organizing and grassroots engagement by empowering individuals to make a difference in communities across Canada.
