Marine Conservation Institute

Marine ecosystems are essential for human survival, wealth, and well-being, and are the Earth’s biggest life support system. As a leader in the global movement to protect and recover the integrity of vast ocean areas, Marine Conservation Institute uses the latest science to identify important marine ecosystems around the world and then advocates for their protection. We work with scientists, politicians, government officials and other organizations to identify key threats to areas in the sea and then build workable solutions. Our unique effectiveness comes from our vision, expertise and our willingness to partner with others. Since starting as the vision of one person in 1996, Marine Conservation Institute, a nonprofit organization, has become a major catalyst in the effort to save our planet, the most pressing challenge of our time.

Mission Statement

Marine Conservation Institute is dedicated to securing permanent, strong protection for the oceans’ most important places – for us and future generations.

Program Details

We’ve worked hard to protect the ocean for over twenty years. Our team uses the latest scientific research to identify important ocean places and advocate for their protection through our two primary initiatives - Blue Parks and the Atlas of Marine Protection.
With our unique and global Blue Park Award initiative, we celebrate the world’s best ocean protection. Blue Parks ensure that protected areas are working to save marine life and our oceans! The goal is to reach the target of 30% protection by 2030.
The Atlas of Marine Protection is the world's most comprehensive marine protected area database. We update this conservation tool to provide the most up-to-date and accurate accounting of marine protection on the water, all while expanding our collaborations with conservation organizations and conducting new research.
