Friends of the Environment

Mission Statement

Preserve the environment of Abaco, The Bahamas through conservation, education, and research facilitation.

Friends of the Environment (FRIENDS) was established in Hope Town, Abaco, Bahamas in 1988 as a grassroots volunteer organization working to raise awareness of issues facing Bahamian marine resources. As Abaco continued to develop, the need for conservation and environmental education grew, leading the organization to open a centralized office in Marsh Harbour and hire staff to implement island wide education and conservation programs. FRIENDS was impacted during Hurricane Dorian in September 2019 by the loss of its offices, classroom, and equipment. FRIENDS is now working to help the island recover while campaigning to rebuild a new and improved Learning Centre that can support the organisation's mission and highlight sustainable practices on island.
