Sombra Mezcal is an award-winning agave spirit, produced in Oaxaca, Mexico. The company produces mezcal at the vertically integrated Sombra palenque (farm / distillery) and sells and markets the brand globally, with the US being our primary market.
Founded in 2006 by Master Sommelier Richard Betts, Sombra is a leader in the mezcal category in pursuing sustainable production methods that respect the local environment and local economy. These initiatives include:
Water conservation: rain water is collected from the roof and stored in underground tanks, a pure alternative to municipal water
Sustainable forestry: firewood used in the earthen ovens is sourced from certified renewable forests
Upcycling: used agave solids are compressed into adobe bricks, used for building and as pellet fuel sources
Composting: fermented agave and effluent are used to create compost for local farmers
Supporting the local community: Sombra Mezcal funds after school programs in the arts.
